With the increasing housing shortage in the growth areas, the debate about possible redensification of (inner) cities is intensifying. The focus here is on increasing the number of storeys in Wilhelminian-style buildings and the redensification of post-war settlements. However, the most problematic areas in terms of urban development, the large single-family house areas, have so far been left out. In contrast to other areas of the big city, they seem to have a milieu that protects them from any changes. But why?
Based on Ludwig Hilberseimer's concept of mixed-use development the project aims to explore the possibility of urbanizing the densification of larger single-family housing areas using Berlin examples: How can the carpet of single-family housing areas be supplemented with high-rise buildings, even skyscrapers, to create spatially exciting and articulated areas that are socially and functionally mixed. What functions should these new urban building blocks take up and enable? After the formulation of urban-spatial concepts, one of the new high-rise buildings conceived here must be given an architectural concrete form.
