Once every six months, the Department of Architecture, Urban and Landscape Planning at the University of Kassel organises the tour "rundgang", where all the work produced during the semester is exhibited. The exhibition is accompanied by public discourse, the student council café and evening events.
For this reason, many people will once again visit the tour on the university campus from Tuesday, 16 July to Thursday, 18 July and get an impression of the work processes and the student work created by Bachelor's and Master's students.
This summer semester, we, a group of students in the second semester, have therefore considered developing a structure or a kind of pavilion as part of our design studio R:AUS, so that the tour can also take place outside this year.
The project is set up as a design-built format. We students, after extensive analysis of the university campus as a place and the Rundgang as a programme, have formulated our own designs to add value to both components. Now that this phase has been completed, one of the numerous designs is to be realised in 1:1 and be ready for the tour in July.
THE design "Under Tension" combines everything that a good tour needs. Space to present and discuss, the possibility to rest or to climb, fresh coffee and cold beer. Our design consists exclusively of straps and unfolds between the supports of the new ASL building on campus. To build the structure, only about 500 of these straps are needed. Our structure activates the site and assigns it new uses. The design defines itself through the different arrangements of the tension belts. In the entrance area A public area opens up. Out of the structure arise seating and climbing levels, a bar and a swing. A new, exciting and attractive space that invites you to linger. In the rear area, next to the staircase a presentation room OPENS UP. The denser arrangement of the tension belts creates a separate, but still visible space. This generates additional presentation space. Our design is limited to the period of the tour AT THE END OF THE SEMESTER. The structure is flexible and can be easily assembled and disassembled. The straps can be reused in many ways after dismantling. Our structure will clamp all visitors and will be the new centre of the Summer Tour 2019!
